3/24/2023 0 Comments Avadon the black fortress reddit![]() If you're going to make an 'old school' retro style game of any kind, it should give the appearance that it's old school but under the hood it should be more on a par with the games people are used to buying today. Not 2020, it's like a 15 years behind 2020. I didn't even mention the screen flickering, the faded colors, it's like the game is from the 1990's and a poor attempt was made to bring it into 2005. From my perspective, it's unplayable in it's current state. I only paid 3 bucks for it, but I refunded it. I attempted to adjust it to other settings 1920x1080, 1680x1050 and it doesn't help, in fact it shrinks the box of the play area even smaller like I was playing on a monitor that had those resolutions and a smaller screen size, it's comical to run into these kinds of problems even before you try to play the game. My Monitor's resolution is 2560x1440, the game screen play area is so tiny it's like playing with micro miniatures. It reminds me of the kind of game you could buy in the Big Lots Bargain bin 10 or 20 years ago. If you are talking about Avadon: The Black Fortress, the only place to sell the linux version is gameolith, which unfortunately only does linux versions and. Might be worth it to give those a try. This game, in 2020 should be of a higher quality. Turn on Disable display scaling on high DPI settings. There is, however, a completely free demo of both the first and second Avadon games on Spiderweb's website. Disable this setting for Avadon only Right-click on the games executable for example, C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonAvadon The Black FortressAvadon.exe. In the end, I'd probably recommend it based on your questions, but it's not 100% knowable. Potions / similar can be really critical on higher difficulties or just for the more difficult fights. Gear and character development can be pretty significant. Probably the only ones that do are party-member based. I don't really recall any truly significant decisions that reverberate later. How good is the roleplaying aspect? (does gear matter, do potions matter, can you make choices that matter etc.) It's not quite the same, though it's not a perfect indicator. Being a fan of the Black Isle / Infinity engine RPGs is probably the closest modern-indicator. I can't say with 100% certainty as it's not the same target audience, but I feel that there's a pretty solid overlap in the fanbases for both groups. If I loved Fallout 2, planescape, baldur's gate, arcanum, etc. I'd consider it a pretty significant part of the game, though not the main attraction. The combat is turn based and can get fairly tactical in the harder fights. How good is the combat and is it the main part of the game? It's a world of greys, with no obvious good/bad guys. The story itself is both simple enough to follow and complicated enough to be interesting. The writing probably isn't good enough that he could become a writer, but it definitely works to convey the information and story. ![]() Only played the first Avadon so far, but: If the combat felt too slow or the game-world too limiting, then you might not enjoy Spiderweb games. What it boils down to is why you didn't like Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate & similar are much more action-centric for the combat. To enjoy combat, you'll generally need to be able to find it fun to look at it from a tactical perspective, instead of from just an action perspective. These games are very word-dense, and to properly enjoy them you need to do a lot of reading. Combat and skills aren't identical between the two, but they largely work the same. Avernum is more free-form: you can travel across an overland map, giving it a bit of a Fallout (the original) feel. Avadon was a very hub-centric game: you had a central hub (Avadon) and a handful of other hubs that you traveled to, and everything "spoked" out from those locations. ![]() They're very similar on a mechanical level but they also have some differences. I've played two of Spiderweb's games: Avadon and Avernum: Escape From the Pit. Well, to start with it's important to note that Baldur's Gate isn't turn-based: it's real-time with pause.
